Destination for Anniversary #2- Chicago IL

Tomorrow marks our 2 year Anniversary and to celebrate Kevin and I went to Chicago! We left at 6:19am and arrived at 12pm! I have been busy planning everything for the last couple of months now and for our first day I took Kevin along for a trip down my childhood memory lane! I was quick to discover my once wide world really consisted of about 3 blocks so we park at my elementary school and walked to all the destinations...(warning lots of pics as this walks you through my memory lane as well, some may get bored sorry!)
After a 6 hour drive Kevin looks thrilled! :)

Hannum Elementary

The old playground is gone and so is the giant tire jungle gym! Remember Kite Day and pulverizing Mr Bop with ketchup and mustard on Field day?

Here is the last crosswalk to the school grounds. Remember the old crossing guard gave us bubble gum after school?

the path along St Germain Catholic school that we all walked going to school

I remember Katrina and Karen got pestered by some boys near the dumpsters when we walked home from school.

Remember the black cat that would greet us at that gate when we walked by?

The church down the street from our old house

come on Mom want to race! Looking at it today it was obvious you always let me win! :)

Sorry Kat they removed your hand prints and name that you put in the concrete before it dried!

the steep drive way i was always scared of loosing control of my bike and going down the driveway and crashing into the garage door.

Remember Sandy the golden lab? They lived here!

I think the woman who lived there spoke spanish and Kari and I played with her Grandkids when they came to visit

Here it is and to my surprise its for sale!! I joked with Kevin we should buy it and move here it really is a lovely neighborhood!

they got rid of the big pine tree and added some nice landscaping

my friend Kristen lived in that house across the street.

one of Tommy's mean friends lived in that house across the street

Dad do remember digging up the grass in-between the houses and elping to put the rocks there?

We loved to climb the trees at Karen's house and riding our bikes on the sidewalk

Remember the old man that lived here and gave us Candy and trinkets? he would sit with his garage door open and we would ride our bikes up to him and say hello.

His neighbor didnt like us though and got mad when he caught us turning our bikes around in his driveway, but just look at how big his driveway was!!

this was the "Fresh Prince" house as we called it across the street from the church

this is the corner where our church used to be. I told Kevin how dad would ride the lawn mower over to the church from our house and we would follow with our bikes and ride in the parking lot all day while dad mowed the lawn.

in the back you can see the hospital down the street from the house.

We walked to the park we used to go to all the time and came upon these prints

caught a glimpse of the local fire department

Beverly Park now called Sullivan Park

alas they didnt have the cool roll-y slide nor the fire engine jungle gym but it looked the same. Remember when I ran away from Katrina all around the park and across the street because I didnt want to go home? Boy was that a big spanking!

pretty fall colors

Thats right its still there! We went to Uncle Sams I got of course a hot dog and Kevin got a sub we shared fries.
Kevin's first time!

everything is just as I remembered!

one of the decorations that i remember most!

Chicago style beef hotdog just like back in the day! And in true Lopez fashion, since we forgot to order drinks, we ended up drinking our own pepsi out in the car! ha ha :)

yay!
After lunch we drove to a spot most of my family has been to, the Plush Horse for some yummy ice cream!

i thought this was cute and thought it was perfect for Aeris is was like an inch tall cone, so cute!

Kevin pointed this out!

and of course I had to choose my childhood favorite, Blue Bubblegum ice cream!

that was only one scoop! the portions were huge! I only ate about half as I thought it a little improper to spit out the gum peices and save them for the end now that im an adult. Remember mom and dad?

me with the shop's icon

they have about 50 flavors to choose from.

yay!

so glad I got to have a blast to the past, now off to the big city!

our first glimpse

very happy with the room at Days Inn! I was a bit leery bc the Days Inn in Grove City leaves much to be desired.

breakfast nook

nice bathroom

huge walk in closet was not expecting this
Well that is it for Day 1 Chicago! We are tired and have to rest for the big day ahead tomorrow!! Pray that we figure out the public transportation!
